“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” — Mother Teresa

Think words don’t matter? Think again.

Research varies, but it is generally accepted that approximately 10% of communication is verbal – the tip of the iceberg.

In simple terms, it’s more about how you say it than the words you use. The bulk of effective communication lies in our tone, pace, energy, and body language.

For a moment, imagine yourself on the phone having a conversation with a client. When you’re on the phone, your words carry the full weight of your message. Your client can’t see your face, but they can hear and sense hesitation, your attitude, confidence, or doubt—and they’ll make judgments accordingly.

Let’s compare two approaches that can have a positive or negative impact on the potential outcome:

Person A: “Um… I think we can do that this week. I’ll try to find out today, but I’m not sure I can get back to you till tomorrow.”

Person B: “I’m not able to confirm we can complete the job this week, however, I will have a status update for you first thing tomorrow.”

Who would you trust more?

Positive, Action-Oriented Language

Using positive, action-oriented language isn’t just good manners—it’s smart business. Studies show people comprehend positive statements one-third faster than negative ones. Language shapes perception, and perception builds trust.

Consider this simple shift:

❌ “I’ll try.”

✅ “I will.”

Or:

❌ “There’s nothing I can do about that.”

✅ “Let me look into what our options are.”

By changing just a few words, you go from passive to proactive, from uncertain to credible. Want better results in your conversations? Start with accountability, clarity, and intention.

Words are more than sounds—they’re tools of influence. Whether you’re making a sales call, solving a problem, or simply updating a client, your words can either open doors or close them.

Speak with clarity. Choose powerfully. Lead with your voice.
