We’re about a quarter of the way into the year.

Whether you feel “ahead,” “behind,” or “barely started,” I want to invite you into something more important than a progress report: A learning report.

Genie Goals are not just about outcomes. They’re about who you become along the way.

The real return on a goal is the person you grow into while pursuing it.

1. Take a 30-Minute Honest Review

Grab your journal or a blank document and respond to these prompts:

  1. What did I hope for when I chose this Genie Goal?
  2. What progress have I actually made? (Be specific: actions, conversations, decisions.)
  3. Where did I surprise myself (for better or worse)?
  4. What have I learned about my patterns and behaviours when things get difficult? (Be honest with yourself)

2. Apply the 3-Q Lens: Intelligence, Emotional, Passion

In some of my programs (including ASHRAE YEA and leadership cohorts), I use the 3-Q lens:

  • IQ – Intelligence Quotient: What you know and have learned = competencies.
  • EQ – Emotional Quotient: How you manage yourself and relate to others = emotional intelligence.
  • PQ – Passion Quotient: What energizes you and gives your work meaning = your “why,” purpose, or calling.

Look at your Genie Goal through that lens:

IQ:

  • What new knowledge or skill have I gained?
  • What do I know now that I didn’t three months ago?

EQ:

  • How have I handled discouragement, fear, or feedback?
  • Where did I respond in a way I’m proud of? Where do I still want to grow?

PQ:

  • Does this Genie Goal still feel deeply meaningful?
  • If yes, what part lights me up the most?
  • If not, what needs to be refined or refocused?

3. Decide: Continue, Refine, or Re-Focus?

Based on your reflection, choose one of three paths for Q2:

  1. Continue: “This Genie Goal is still right. I’m committed to another 90 days with small adjustments.”
  2. Refine: “The direction is right, but the scope or pace needs to change.” Example: Narrow the focus, shift milestones, or re-sequence steps.
  3. Re-focus: “I’ve learned what I needed from this goal. It’s time to set a new or adjacent Genie Goal that aligns better with my current season.”

None of these options is “failure.” They’re all forms of conscious leadership.

Mature leaders don’t cling to old goals for ego’s sake. They refine their commitments, so their energy goes where it matters most – to results!

4. Set Your Next 90-day Stretch

Whatever path you choose, update your Genie Goal for the next quarter:

  • ONE outcome you’d like to see by the end of the next 90 days.
  • TWO weekly commitments that will move you toward it.
  • THREE people you’ll keep in the loop.

Write it, share it, and, if it’s helpful, pair it with a Growth Through Learning resource, course, or coaching touchpoint to keep you resourced.

Reflection Questions for Your Quarter-Time Review

  1. What’s the biggest lesson my Genie Goal has taught me so far?
  2. Am I continuing, refining, or re-focusing for the next 90 days? And why?
  3. What is one courageous conversation or decision I need to make in Q2 related to this goal?

As you look ahead, remember: You’re not behind. You’re on a journey.

My hope is that these Genie Goal check-ins help you move beyond resolutions that fade and into a year where your goals are aligned with your heart, supported by your systems, and integrated into your leadership and life.
